Vroom, vroom.

Today, I had my first driving lessons. Well, first official lessons, since I’ve had a little bit of experience with 2 of my father’s drivers (one of which is a good friend). Mr. Morgan (my teacher) has a nice, calm, patient voice. He said I did very well for a beginner.

But the star today is mainly my sister. She drove for the very first time and she did a great job, considering all that she has been through what with the brain tumor and all. She had a bit of trouble with the hand signals, but her responses are very sharp. Some one ‘bad drive’ her today and she did very well in the circumstances. Both my mother and father were present and they were comfortable when both of us were on the road, Dad almost fell asleep when I was driving. I’m really proud of my sister and afterwards, we all celebrated with Chinese. YUM Chow mien!

YS Falls

Yesterday, I went to YS Falls. I thought it was a nice outing as a ‘before I go to Michigan to freeze my bum off’ trip!

I went with Uncle Joshua (Bishop Bent’s brother), my mother, my sister. We went in the pool and climbed the falls and took loads of pictures.

Pictures to be added soon!

Convention 2010 – The Awesome Power of Praise

Praise the Lord! sign

Wow. Just wow. This convention at my church, Santa Hill City of Faith, has been the best and had the most impact than any other in my life.

Prayer meetings were the most important part of the day. I arrive at 6:00 and get involved in intensive prayer. It seems that when you start the day directly with God – no eating or anything, just going straight into prayer – the rest of the day is filled with joy and peace. From Sunday, straight till Wednesday, I was filled with the Holy Ghost during worship and church. And through the theme, I’ve really found what it is to really worship. True worship is when you give your all, regardless of who is around you, what is going on in your life. And when you can do this, blessings must come, changes must come. The key verses were Psalms 149 and 150, Acts 16 vs 25-31.

Baptism morning held some very serious and touching testimonies. Many tears were shed. 11 persons were baptized, and that’s amazing. Youth day was the most amazing day. I was filled beyond belief, spoke in tongues and let the Holy Spirit move through me. There was such joy afterwards that spread through the rest of the day.

Bishop Oscar Bent, a preacher and prophet from Toronto, Canada, stayed at the house for a week, as well and his brother, and also his wife for a day. He’s a sweet man and soft and loving, but when he’s preaching, he’s aggressive. He preached almost every night, occasionally coming of the podium to stand on the benches for our bums, and shout out his signature ‘C’mon and preach Brother Bent!’ or ‘Somebody! Somebody!’ or ‘Come on and praise Him! Stand to your feet and praise Him! Clap your hands and praise Him!’. He’s oh so charismatic when he is preaching and the Word is well delivered. He has the power of God, sometimes he touches his forehead or blows on his hand and most times, people fall to the ground.

He touched me one night. It was on youth night (which was such a blessing, and I sang with all my heart). He asked all the youth to come up to the altar. He called me out and said ‘I see God taking you far….far. God’s gonna take you far…far. And he’s gonna bless you from when you wake up, to when you lay down.’ Then he touched his forehead, and touched my forehead and I fell.

Convention overall was great, people were filled with the Holy Ghost, people worshipping God, people accepting Jesus as their Lord and Saviour. Amazing.

K-zoo here I come!

Tabs on folders

On Monday I went to the US embassy. I had a student visa appointment and it was … interesting I suppose.

Before

Firstly, when I woke up, the gum surrounding my wisdom tooth decided to swell to the size of a pregnant elephant. Of course, my first thought was ‘Why today?’ but mourning over that was going to get me nowhere. It was painful to talk, smile or even move my face, my mouth couldn’t close to eat my breakfast, so my cousin Ann-marie and I made our way to the embassy.

We walked for roughly 20 minutes in the Kingston sun. When we arrived, I was half and hour too early, so said the pretty indian lady and was told to wait across the road. We decided to go to sugar and spice and sit and wait instead. We ended up going to the pharmacy for panadol for my tooth, and to the chinese store for water to wash it down with. By the time we were done, I left all my things except the essentials with Ann. It was time.

Interview Prep

I gingerly crossed the road and made it over the the embassy. Long line of people, I thought. Eventually the line was cut in half and the pretty Indian lady checked our materials. We made our way inside, 5 persons at a time. We hate to go through the metal detector. I guess those people didn’t want Dudus cousins to stick up the poor American consulars and demand a visa by saying ‘Yow, approve mi visa now before mi kill you!’ while looking around suspiciously with daggered eyes. Afterwards we were instructed to sit in rows down the aisle.

Everyone was DEAD quiet! Its almost as if they were all waiting for execution day. I fixed back my belt before I sat down. A lady smiled at me, and I with her. A man walked out shouting that he wasn’t giving anyone any of his food. A girl and her child walked out of the dreaded doors and sat down on the opposite side of the rest of us, and of course, we are all wondering whats her story. All of us sat dumbfounded wondering when they were going to call us in as I dried my sweaty palms.

This man wearing a smile told us to form a line and make our way in. He seemed to put us at ease in his manner, the way he talked. We went in and this serious multitasker gave us a yellow slip, told us to write our passport numbers on it and go to the immediate left. I spotted ‘Mount Holyoke’ on a girl’s materials. MH was one of the schools that waitlisted me. I immediately turned to her and asked her if she was apart of AQUEST, sadly she was not.

Man with lit dynamite

After sitting down, we had to wait another good 20 mins before our numbers were called. When it was my turn (and I was B270), I went to counter 12 to a pretty curly hair blond with big blue eyes. She registered my fingerprints and I told her my problem with scheduling (wrong passport used) and she said I was totally fine. She was a nice lady.

Afterwards, I had to sit again and wait on my number to be called again. I sat beside a lady who was also applying for an F-1 visa. She was worried about not being told whether her visa was going to be approved. She relayed a story where in the british embassy, they dont tell people that they are denied and a rasta man sat there waiting on word on his visa for the whole day and got up and said ‘Why the hell you neva mek mi leave if you did a go deny me! Give me back mi frigging papers!….’ and so on. We laughed. We sat there for some time listening to the type of questions they are going to ask us. Eventually they got around to calling my number.

The Interview

My consular was white male with brown hair and red lips.
“Hello, how are you? Passport and confirmation sheet please.”
“Hi. Here you go.”
“Have you ever had a visa before?”
“Yes.”
“Is it in here?” (gesturing to passport I handed him)
“No, I don’t have it. But it is expired.”
“Ah, ok. What is the name of your school?”
“Kalamazoo College”
“Where is that located?”
“In Michigan”
“What are you going to study there?”
“Computer Science.”
“Why did you choose this school?”
“It is more flexible than the local school in terms of coursework and there are more opportunities there”
“Where are you going to live, with family or on campus?
“On campus.”
“Can I have your acceptance letter, bank statements from your sponsor and transcripts if you have them?”
“Sure.” (Gives him)
“You go ahead and open that.” (gives back Hampton transcript)
“Ok.” (opens it and gives him)
“When does school start?”
“School officially starts on September 20 but orientation is on the 9th”
“What are you going to study there?”
“Computer Science.”
“Living on campus?”
“Yes.”
“Ok head on over to counter 26 to discuss your DHL delivery plans. Have a nice day!”
“You too, thanks.”

Of course, I spoke as properly as I could manage what with a swollen gum, swollen jaw and my mouth being unable to close to properly pronounce my ‘s’, ‘t’, ‘c’ and ‘d’ s.

After

So then I paid my JMD$836.00 at the DHl counter, gave my name and address, confirmed that I will be collecting in Kingston since they dont sent to P.O. box addresses and left. I went outside, sorted my papers and zipped up, went through the exit door, a man told me to push the door I was heading towards, so I did and then freedom! I went to collect Ann at Sugar and Spice and we walked back to the house in Mona.

It wasnt scary and I thought it would be longer but, it was really short and quick, the interview itself that it. That was roughly 2 minutes worth of talking and looking at files and I suppose at the end, he was convinced that I would leave the US after my course ends. Thank God everything worked out!

Dudus captured!

Man in jail cell

Christopher ‘Dudus’ Coke was captured on this momentous day at about 4pm on the Mandela Highway during a road check (Read the full story at Jamaica Observer). At 4 pm I was walking up and down with my mother at her work place completely oblivious to this news. Apparently Al Miller was taking him to the US Embassy when they got caught during the road check. Questions are raised about what is Reverend Miller’s real role in this whole thing, and whether or not he got the award money! (I swear, the money is all that people care about!). I hope he (Dudus) lives to speak the truth especially who is involved.

Speaking of my mother, I went to her workplace today and saw some people who I havent seen in a looooong time. It was a pleasant experience spending the day with my mom, we had lunch together and paraded the school together and I felt proud to have her by my side. Everyone says I look just like her which I am sooo proud of, but the main comment was that I’m taller than her! Haha, she was in heels and I was in flats and I’m still a good couple of inches taller. Thanks Dad.

Happy Father’s Day!

Crayons next to Father's Day card

Today marks the day I told my father in heavy detail what I think about him and how he affects my life. In terms of gifts. this year was a bit different. Instead of buying a regular card or other materialistic gift, I gave my father a handwritten letter of appreciation. Talk about personal touch! I think this gift is more treasured than a regular gift because it was really from the heart. My family had a special devotion for him, as we do on all father’s days in the past. After which we went to church with him. They had an unorganized little gift giving from ladies to men, it was obvious much planning did not go into buying the gifts based on what my father got, but the men seemed to enjoy it none the less and my father looked happy. He seemed to enjoy his day and for that I am glad. I have a great dad, so many people have absentee fathers, or have been abused by them or have fathers who abuse smoking and drinking habits. My father has done all he can to provide for us and he is a role-model, mentor and a friend.

Speaking of my father, he is Alwin Hales, PhD. He has a couple of sites that I want to mention.

  1. Ahales.com – This is his personal web portal that has links to all the sites that he maintains
  2. Alwin’s Blog – This is his personal blog which includes posts on travel, thoughts and pictures.
  3. Sunnylodge Domains need to register a domain? Well here’s a great alternative!
  4. Irieblogs – This is Daddy’s new toy, Irieblogs is the next ultimate blogging platform with a Jamaican feel. Start a new blog today!

#1 – reMIND Graphic Novel

Now that I have some time on my hands, I’m going to take advantage of it. Today I bring a new webcomic called reMIND that I saw on Meek comic. The main characters are a girl and her cat and there are only two chapters so far. The story is new, but the plot so far is great and the graphics are amazing, especially the colors! Oh how I wish someday I could draw too! Click the thumbnail to go to Chapter 1.

Freedom.

The days of uniforms, constantly seeing little children running around me and causing trouble, continuously being oppressed by the authority and treated like children, heavy limitation and restrictions and ignorant school girl drama is over. High school is done! As a person who has been to three different high schools, I feel that there are a few comparisons I should quickly roll over.

Ardenne – rather strict, but very resourceful, always looking for ways to take your money. Tasty food. Sorta snobbish but brilliant students, Lots of drama!
Manchester – rather laidback, limited resources but cheap, Lots of food variety, long devotions, very, very friendly and unified people. Home of geniuses.
Hampton/Munro – takes your money whether you like it or not, very restricted and oppressive (esp hampton), very resourceful. Friendly, intelligent and extremely chatty people. Heavily laden with school girl drama.

Who knows, maybe in the future when the mood strikes me, Ill be more detailed in my description of my schools. But for now, I’m glad its over!

Right now, I’m looking to get my visa to *hopefully* go to Kalamazoo College! Yep, I got a scholarship, all thanks to AQuEST, Dr. Minnot and Father’s need to do accounting! I’m a bit excited, bit I remain only cautiously optimistic. I don’t want anything to blow out my candle but I have to be aware that the wind may just sneak up on me.

Exams, oh brother. Out of them all, Math Paper 2 was the hardest but I managed. I really hope I do well because I truly did do my very best. I really really did try like I’ve never tried before!! :?

In other news, my mother is going to be a minister!!!!!! I’m SO SO SO proud of her! She did her second sermon last Sunday, and I was there to witness it! Pretty soon she will be officially ordained. Oh mommy! :D I feel like I might just burst with pride. Really.

Also, in other news, I’ve moved from Drupal to WordPress. Simply because WordPress is easier to use, and updates are less frequent. However, I do love Drupal, and may use it again in the future, maybe when it is more stable. I think I may tweak the theme some more though.

*Sigh* I had a little school’s-out-lets-celebrate outing with my friends from Ardenne last night. We watched Karate Kid and ate Frosties and Chinese. It was really fun and nice seeing them again. Now that summer is here, I’ve been sleeping alot, and I feel like a turtle in a race against hamsters. Or myself in a race against Usain Bolt and Asafa Powell. Time seems zip past me, lifting my skirt and exposing my under garments in its haste.

White sandy beaches?

Two days ago, my dad, sister and Royston went to Negril. In a nutshell, Dad shot a gun, I saw a naked man and a topless girl and we ate pizza while my hair shrunk….(click each thumbnail for bigger view)

We woke at 4:00 that morning, while sleep slapping our faces we headed out, because Dad had his shooting arrangement at 6:30. When we reached, we were shocked to see that we would have to wait until 8:00 to get any food, because no where was open. I did not think that it would be so slouchy. Anyways, eventually we ate, slept while Dad went to his ranging class and went to the beach (Chances) while Dad shot his rounds in preparation for getting his gun license.

My sister slept through the whole thing, but Royston and I went into the water, splashed, dived, swam, tickling my toes in the sand, letting the waves slap me silly, the whole works. Before I went in the water I saw a topless girl with a round bosom taking pictures and when I came out, I saw a naked man heading in. I know these things happen and of course nude beaches exist, but I’ve never seen these things, you know, RIGHT INFRONT OF MY FACE. Afterwards, we settled for some pizza at the same place – pepperoni, cheese and mushroom pizza and jerk chicken and cheese pizza. MM GOOD. Though the waitress was slouchy, the taste made up for it.

The right picture shows my sister and me. At this point we were trying to curb our hunger with oranges. I’m on the right, she’s on the left. She had a miraculous recovery from a brain tumor some years ago. Still recovering, but no one could know unless it is said or if someone asks which grade she is in.

——
On another note, I went to Youth Explosion at church on Monday night and I was filled again and so were many other youths at the alter. I’ve never worshipped before like I did on that night and it really has a calming effect afterwards. It is wonderful to see the youths praising God. Church is nice :) and God is good. Oh! some pimping Christian Forums.

Uh-oh, you’re in trouble!

My stomach churned and my heart was beating so hard I thought I actually heard it resonate in my ears when Mrs. Beckford summoned us to her office, straight out of devotion. Not solely out of fear, because I did not do anything wrong, but out of excitement. I’ve never been one of the ‘bad girls’ before; I was the only ‘good girl’ out of the three of us that went into the place of intended punishment and interrogation. So, naturally, I thought what an experience it is to be on the other side unknown to me.

Prior to that, we met with the Boarding Director downstairs. Apparently, the three of us girls as Munro-based boarders we were allegedly ‘leaving the boarding school with a man’ in the wee hours of the dark morning without telling anyone, which leaves room for intended innuendos. One of the groundsmen saw us at six in the morning hopping into a car, and told authorities. It was actually our physics teacher taking us to Munro to catch the bus for the trip.

Being new, I expected that the teacher would take care of the notifications such as briefing the principal and otherwise. I understand that one of us should have told the Boarding Director, but I made mistake: I assumed that would have been taken care of too. I did not know the school runs that way. However I understand their distress.

I feel bad only about being called into Mrs Beckford’s office for something negative, but otherwise, I am ok, because I know I haven’t done anything wrong. It’s actually the first time in my life that I’ve been summoned to the VP’s office for something negative. We are supposed to meet with her again on Monday. I expect full pressuring interrogation.

The trip in itself was informative, we did a lab on operating amplifiers at the Univerisity of the West Indies as well as went through a tutorial on the whole topic for CAPE. Good learning! :p

PS: D’oh! Happy new year, merry belated xmas and happy holidays! My college applications are coming along well. Christmas and New year’s was a period chock full of massive essay writing and correcting for me, fortunately I am no longer plunged deep and drowning anymore, just waddling at the surface. ;)
